Important Points About Emotional Health
In the old days we thought that only our physical health was involved in our overall health, but today we have a more holistic, total mind and body view. So what is mental wellbeing? It is now well known that a decline in physical health will cause a decline in emotional and mental health and vice-versa. Neglected health has a negative effect on a person’s day-to-day life. Unfortunately, many people these days rely too much on medication and not enough of overall health and wellness techniques to attain and maintain good health. In modern medicine practices, a doctor is far more likely to prescribe a pharmaceutical fix than to investigate the possibility of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, allergies, digestive problems or other possible causes of mental and physical illness.
The Link Between Mental Health And Physical Health
We tend to think of fitness as being a physical matter; however, the health and vitality of the mind are also key to overall health and wellbeing. Total health and fitness allows a person to attain his or her maximum potential in all areas of life. Furthermore, people who are totally fit are able to cope with the stressors of society without falling prey to problems such as drug and alcohol addiction.
Exercising on a regular basis provides tremendous stress relief that benefits both mind and body. The body is controlled by the brain, so it is very important to have a fit and mind with a healthy body. A great way to be mentally fit over 40 is to practice brain training to sharpen the mind as it is the mind that regulates your body.
When you exercise, your body will naturally grow stronger. Exercise has direct benefits for the joints, bones, muscles and digestive system. When you are over 40 it helps regulate blood sugar levels, boost the immune system and keep weight at acceptable levels. Additionally, regular exercise promotes a sense of overall peace and wellbeing.
Research uncovers new links between physical fitness and emotional and mental fitness every day. This is a whole new way to view our bodies, minds and spirits. We now know that these aspects of our being are all of one piece and must be taken care of in a holistic manner.
You Can Stay Healthy And Strong Overall When Your Mind Is Strong And Resilient
A person whose life is balanced in social, emotional, spiritual, mental and physical realms is balanced and sound overall. When a person enjoys successful relationships, personal growth and sense of purpose in life, the result is a balanced state of mind. For this reason, harmony in work, family and social settings is crucial to mental health.
Be sure to challenge your body and mind by stepping outside of your comfort zone from time to time. This will help you avoid the feeling of being stuck in a rut. Additionally, it will help you learn to handle unexpected challenges as they occur in everyday life. Avoid the trap of falling into a sedentary life of TV viewing and relaxation. Instead, add some enjoyable physical activities to each and every day. Dance, walk your dog, swim, cycle, play games or do whatever appeals to you to keep your body moving and keeping that inner spark alive when you are over 40. Vary the route you take to go to work and other familiar places. Stimulate your emotional and mental health by seeing something different every day. All of this works together to help you handle changes and unexpected events with grace and ease.
If you are wondering how to improve mental health through life’s transitions into your forties and beyond just consider my own situation. I was once an international athlete. I became used to daily physical training, and I found that this activity helped me to stretch, grow and attain flexibility both mentally and physically. Now that I am older, I am not as physically active or stretched as much mentally with the pressure of international competition; however, I have taken up singing as a hobby. It helps me feel good and gives me the opportunity to spend time with others who share my passion for singing. Striving to sing well and associating with others helps me to strive for excellence in all areas of my life and my mental and emotional capacity is stretched in new ways. Singing helps me to become stronger and more resilient in mind and spirit.
You should always challenge yourself as a way of strengthening your mind. If you do not test your mind, it will cease to grow and wonder. For this reason, you should play challenging games, work puzzles, read difficult materials and so on. Your mind will continue to strengthen and grow as long as you continue to challenge it. This is very important in growing mature gracefully and maintaining your independence. Be careful not to become complacent. Always accept challenge.
